Lore is outside, absentmindedly scanning the horizon, when he notices someone approaching him.

"There you are, Brother," he greets pleasantly, turning around. "Have you made any progress with La Forge?"

"It is too early to tell if the nanocortical fibers performed their function," Data replies, flatly.

He watches Lore carefully, looking for something. He is not sure what he is looking for. Perhaps a reason to stay…

Why is it that he seems to have forgotten why he is here in the first place?

Lore is utterly oblivious to Data's confusion. He's not even looking at him, at the moment.

"I suspect none of the humans will survive the process, but then, it's their own fault, isn't it?" He glances at his brother again. "They never should have come here."

He laughs. "What were they thinking?"

Data stares at the empty space between them, taking the rhetorical question seriously.

"They came looking for me," he answers.

Lore scoffs again. "Humans are so sentimental," he observes, in a mocking tone.

"I betrayed them," Data continues.

He looks up at his brother. "If they die, I am responsible."

Lore looks back at Data now, sharply. "Why are you talking like that? Is something wrong with your programming?" Seriously, what's happened to him?

He steps closer. "Maybe I should check your systems."

"I do not want you to check my systems," Data snaps, almost recoiling with disgust. "I must resolve these issues myself."

Lore stops. He can't fix the problem, if Data's not going to let him, he realizes. Data would never trust him again. But he fears the worst. Data is talking as though he has somehow reactivated his ethical program…

And after Lore worked so hard to shut it down.

"I think I made a mistake," he says, unable to conceal all of his frustration. If his theory is correct, there's only one thing that could possibly keep Data here now.

"I don't believe you can tolerate the amount of emotion I've given you. Perhaps I should cut back a little." He lifts his fingernail and decreases the transmission.

"How's that?"

Data gasps. If he was looking for a reason to stay, he has found one.

It is even worse now, than it was when he first came here… It is as though someone has taken away his ability to see and hear, both at once. There is existence, but it is nothing. He feels helpless, frightened—except he does not. It is somehow more disturbing to know that he should be frightened, without being able to feel it.

"I do not like it," he says, desperately attempting to hold on to the frail amount of emotion Lore is still transmitting.

"Then you prefer to have more emotions."

"They give you pleasure."

Lore is just taunting him now, he knows. "Yes, please I want more," he pleads, stepping closer.

Even negative emotions are better than nothing… He simply wants to feel something. Anything.

Lore watches his brother's reaction coldly. He can't help enjoying it a little.

"All right. A little more," he concedes, a sarcastic smirk playing at the corner of his mouth. He increases the transmission. "For now."

Data lets out a breath, letting hatred and malice flood into him again. It is a relief.

"Aren't you going to thank me?" Lore presses.

Data stares at him, somewhat suspiciously. But he is sincere when he replies, "Thank you."

"Don't mention it," Lore returns. "I just hope this helps to clarify things for you."

Data hesitates before turning to leave. He feels like more needs to be said, but realizes that there is nothing worth saying.

Perhaps the humans are correct. Perhaps Lore is controlling him after all. Perhaps they were never equals, like his brother led him to believe.

But it does not matter. Because Data would rather be controlled then go back to the way he was. It is selfish. It is wrong. It probably makes him a bad person.

But he cannot help it.

Lore watches Data leave. In his peripheral vision, he notices Crosis coming up beside him.

"I'm concerned about my brother, Crosis," he says. "I don't believe he really wants to be a part of our great future."

There is genuine regret in his voice. His eyes linger after his brother for a moment, and then he lowers his gaze to the ground. He fears the worst.

But he's done everything he can.
